VCAL - VET in Schools VCAL Waht it is?
The Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) is a new hands-on option for Years 11 and 12 students. The VCAL provides students with practical work-related experience, as well as literacy and numeracy skills and the opportunity to build personal skills that are important for life and work. The VCAL is also a recognised qualification, like the VCE.
Students undertaking the VCAL are more than likely considering further education in the VET system, doing an apprenticeship / traineeship or finding employment after completing secondary school. Students planning to go straight into higher education usually do the VCE which allows them to gain an Equivalent National Tertiary Entrance Rank (ENTER) from the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC).
The VCAL's flexibility enables students to design a study program that suits their interests and learning needs. Students select accredited VCE and Vocational Education and Training (VET) modules and units from the following four commpulsory strands:
- Literacy and Numeracy Skills
- Work Related Skills
- Industry Specific Skills
- Personal Development Skills
Students who start their VCAL and then decide they would like to complete their VCE, are able to transfer between certificates. Any VCE studies successfully completed as part of the VCAL program will count towards the VCE.
A certificate and statement of results will be issued to students who successfully complete their VCAL.
